It’s not unusual to see people on horseback on the Pine Ridge Reservation, says Darrell “Tiger” Brown Bull, a University of Minnesota Duluth graduate who grew up on the reservation and is executive director of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. “In a sense, we’re still living traditionally.” Although Pine Ridge, which is composed of 2.1 million acres in southwestern South Dakota, has a reputation for poverty and high unemployment, it’s also a place of pristine beauty, history, and heritage. Brown Bull says he looks forward to the Sun Dance ceremony every summer—a time when the community comes together to pray for healing. “To be with our relatives and dance and pray, that’s the best time.”
