Son Tra Nature Reserve in Da Nang is home to the red-shanked douc, an endangered primate that’s suffered from extensive habitat loss in the Central Highlands of Vietnam because of wartime damage and agricultural expansion. Doucs also have been hunted for food and use in traditional medicines. Jonathan Clayton, ’15 Ph.D., ’17 D.V.M., had to obtain 10 permits to study the doucs and their microbiome. While in Vietnam, he collaborated with GreenViet, an NGO committed to protecting the country’s biodiversity. “We’re promoting awareness of this elegant, beautiful species in order to try to save it,” he says.
