Generous donors made this past year the best one yet for giving to the University of Minnesota

Despite the challenges 2020 has brought, Driven—the University of Minnesota’s $4 billion fundraising campaign—continues to gain momentum as it enters its final months.

When COVID-19 changed life as we know it, generous donors stepped up. As of October 30, they gave $262,696 to support health care workers on the front line.

They also gave $215,902 to the Vice President’s Emergency Support Fund, which boosted COVID-19 research and inventions such as the Coventor.

Between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, the campaign raised $385 million—the highest annual total in the University’s history. During that time, more than 65,000 donors:

Since the start of the campaign, 250,831 donors* have contributed, including 127,941 who had never before given to the University of Minnesota. Within the United States, most of those donors came from Minnesota (163,935), followed by Wisconsin (9,721), and California (7,442). Outside the country, the largest numbers came from Canada (512), the United Kingdom (130), Japan (113), and China (113).

By the end of October,  the University of Minnesota Scholarship in honor of George Floyd received $38,327 in donor support.

The first systemwide scholarships will be awarded in November.

Altogether, their gifts created:

Donors gave $166,066 to the U's Student Emergency Fund (as of October 30), which helped students like Neftali Neri when COVID-19 turned her world upside down. Hear her story.

The journey continues

Although the University has met its $1 billion goal for outreach and community initiatives, we’re continuing to work hard to reach our target of:

  • $1 billion for student scholarships, fellowships, and learning experiences such as internships and study abroad opportunities
  • $2 billion for endowed professorships and chairs and clinical, academic, and field research.
