Banner year
Generous donors made this past year the best one yet for giving to the University of Minnesota
Despite the challenges 2020 has brought, Driven—the University of Minnesota’s $4 billion fundraising campaign—continues to gain momentum as it enters its final months.
Between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020, the campaign raised $385 million—the highest annual total in the University’s history. During that time, more than 65,000 donors:
- Supported students, medical researchers, and frontline caregivers as they responded to the COVID-19 pandemic
- Helped drive change as members of the community call for racial justice
- Created an interdisciplinary partnership to study how the brain develops in childhood and early adolescence
- Brought mobile health care services to neighborhoods that lack access to necessary care.
Since the start of the campaign, 250,831 donors* have contributed, including 127,941 who had never before given to the University of Minnesota. Within the United States, most of those donors came from Minnesota (163,935), followed by Wisconsin (9,721), and California (7,442). Outside the country, the largest numbers came from Canada (512), the United Kingdom (130), Japan (113), and China (113).
By the end of October, the University of Minnesota Scholarship in honor of George Floyd received $38,327 in donor support.
The first systemwide scholarships will be awarded in November.
Altogether, their gifts created:
- 1,235 new undergraduate scholarships funds
- 202 new graduate and professional scholarship funds
- 398 new fellowship funds
- 61 new endowed chairs and professorships (as of June 30, 2020)
The journey continues
Although the University has met its $1 billion goal for outreach and community initiatives, we’re continuing to work hard to reach our target of:
- $1 billion for student scholarships, fellowships, and learning experiences such as internships and study abroad opportunities
- $2 billion for endowed professorships and chairs and clinical, academic, and field research.
