Fishing for scholars

Every winter since 2011, Justin Knebel’s friends and family have come together to honor his memory in a very Minnesotan way: ice fishing.

The talented University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) athlete from Warroad, Minnesota, died in 2002, when he was just 19. A point guard on the Golden Eagles basketball team, Knebel was known as “an ultimate team player working hard on the court and in the classroom,” says then head coach Jeff Oseth. So far, the Justin Knebel Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament, which raises funds for UMC student-athlete scholarships, has supported two UMC students.
