Inspired by nature

Weisman Art Museum

Ojibwe painter and sculptor George Morrison describes his Wood Collage: Landscape as a “painting made of wood.”

Created in 1978, the piece is made from driftwood that Morrison collected on the shores of Lake Superior.  In places, the wood’s texture looks like brushstrokes, hence the description.

Morrison, who was born near the Grand Portage Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota and grew up on Minnesota’s North Shore, says his work was inspired by rock formations along the lake.

The collage, a gift from the late James Gesell, ’57 B.A., and Teddy Gesell, ’57 B.S., is currently displayed at the U of M’s Weisman Art Museum.
