Recipe for a collection
Cookbooks are time capsules. They tell the stories of the immigrants who exposed us to new tastes, our changing view of what is and is not “healthful,” innovations that made dinner preparation more convenient, and more. The Doris S. Kirschner Cookbook Collection at the U of M’s Magrath Library includes more than 5,600 cookbooks that illustrate such themes, serving as a resource for those studying—or just curious about—our culinary history. Kirschner, ’57 B.S., donated her collection to the U in 1985. Additional gifts have allowed for its expansion and maintenance, and funded related lectures.
