Shape of things to come

U of M researchers are testing fabric that uses body heat to fit our  physique.

Led by Julianna Abel, Benjamin Mayhugh Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Brad Holschuh, co-director of the U’s Wearable Technology Lab, the team has designed, manufactured, and tested a textile made of materials that change shape when heated. The textile, which resembles a knit fabric, conforms to irregularly shaped areas, such as the back of the knee.

The researchers anticipate it will have significant potential for medical, aerospace, and other industries.
